The Complete Book List2005
1. Mirror Mirror by Gregory Maguire
I give it : ***
I think it : brilliant. An awesome fanfiction of Snow White mixed up with one of my favourite historical figures, the Borgia family :D
2. [THAI] ลำนำต่างภพ โดย จุฑารัตน์
I give it : 0 and deduction, please.
I think it : disastrous. When Mary (Sue) meets Gary (Stu), the story is scary. The author tried to add a fantasy touch to it, which made things crappier. I mean, seriously wtf. Worse, she repeated her OWN steps, like youmay read just onenovel of her and know everything about her other novels. Boring. Completely pointless and arealcrap.
3. Darkly Dreaming Dexter (Thai Translated Version) by Jeff Lindsay
I give it : 0
I think it : hmm...Don't mention it. - -" I want to drown this book in the sea.The author tried too hard to make believe the hero was a genuis. But how could one believe it when he was far lesssmarter than Hannibal Lecter. Don't talk about intelligence and crime with the readers, mister. You've badlyunderestimated them.
4. Season for the Dead by David Hewson
I give it : *
I think it : was a bit boring. The suspense didn't get me hooked (though it's another/similar to The Da Vinci Code, it didn't have a junk-food-taste-so-good quality that the Da Vinci Code had) and I almost fell asleep while reading it.
5. The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
I give it : **+5
I think it : good. But I would have loved it completely if the author removed the superstition part toward the end of the story. It didn't turn out beautifully or touch me emotionally at all. But it was still a good read, a very enjoyable one from the beginning to almost the end.
6. A Very Long Engagement by Sebastien Jarissot
I give it : *+5
I think it : was pretty hard (for me) to read without falling asleep or losing concentration. Honestly, the motion picture was better.
7. Star Wars : Labyrinth of Evil by James Luceno
I give it : ***
I think it : Brilliant. This is the second Star Wars book that I read in terms of novel (a couple of Jedi Apprentice volumes didn't count) and it's successfully brought me to the SW's appreciation point, the way Legacy of the Jedi did so well last year. (though I remember vaguely of all the details now). Thus, yay. Novels work for me.
8. Star Wars : Revenge of the Sith by Matthew Stover
I give it : ***
I think it : Superb. The book wasso well-done (okay, missppelllinngs don't count. English is hard even in the Galaxy far far away :P) and so completed that I wonder if I'll everenjoy any other SW books. One of the best I may say.
9-11. His Dark Materials the Trilogy by Philip Pullman
I give it : ***
I think it : A must read. (full review here)
12. [REREAD] The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides
I give it : ***
I think it : great. One of a kind. That's why I read it again ^^"
13. Long Way Round by Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman
I give it : **
I think it : was an enjoyable book, a fast paced reading that can put a little grin on your face. Cute jokes. It doesn't change the world as their journey really didn't. It doesn't give more understanding of the way it goes. But a pleasure it truly is. Definitely worth reading for more Ewangoodness ;)
14. Kiss Kiss by Roald Dahl
I give it : ***
I think it : was a good read. A collection of short mystery/thriller stories by the author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory never lets you down :)
15. The Kindaichi Series คินดะอิจิ ตอน ฆาตกรรมแปดหลุมศพ (Thai Translated Version)
I give it : ***
I think it : should be given a try be everyone who enjoys the Japanese thriller/suspense stories.
16. Fingersmith by Sarah Waters
I give it : ***
I think it :was a very very fun book to read. Almost unputdownable despite its thickness. Full of twist and expected turn, the way a good melodrama would *grins* Warning, twas an R ratedVictorian girl-on-girl.
17. Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson
I give it : **
I think it : not bad. I didn't survive in my first attempt of reading it, but succeeded nicely in my second attempt. It's a prequel of Peter Pan and Co., in case you wonder.
18. Falling Angels by Tracy Chevalier
I give it : *
I think it : *yawns*
19. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K.Rowling
I give it : **+5
I think it : Honestly, I don't actually like this book of HP. I enjoyed it, but I prefer the Fourth and Fifth and don't think the Sixth's great as it spent too much time on young love. (Okay, Voldy in Dumby's head is...accepted. It makes a good the Life and Times and Tom Riddle, anyway). And suddenly, phew. What and where's this and that, blah, blah, blah. Okay, we'll wait for the grand finale.
20. Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk
I give it : ***
I think it : Great. By Gawd, Chuck Palahniuk is God.
21-24. The Once and Future King (vol. 1-4) by T.H. White *completed both Thai and English version*
I give it : ***
I think it : was a classic. Fantasy lovers should read it. Usual readersin search of a reading pleasureshould, too.
25. [REREAD] Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll
I give it : **
I think it : worth rereading as you grow up :P
26-32. [REREAD] The Chronicles of Narnia 1-7 by C.S.Lewis
I give it : **+5
I think it : I love 1-4so much, but 5-7 are...you know.
33. The Shadow in the North by Philip Pullman
I give it : ***
34. Leonardo Da Vinci : Flights of The Mind by Charles Nicholl
I give it : ***
I think it : It's been a long time I haven't enjoyed a biography writtenfor a great historical figure in a slightly academic way. Biograohies arealways either too dry or too novel-ish. But this wasa pleasure to read. Perhaps it's just me. I might've been biased towards the subject.
35. The Ruby in the Smoke by Philip Pullman
I give it : **
36. The Tiger in the Well by Philip Pullman
I give it : **
37. Cesare Borgia : His Life and Times by Sarah Bradford
I give it : *
I think it : - -' Bradford should learn how to write first.
38. Lyra's Oxford by Philip Pullman
I give it : **
I think it : was so short you can finish it within, like 15 minutes. It was just to fill the little gap in His Dark Materials.
39. The Family by Mario Puzo
I give it : **
40. Reading Lolita in Tehran : A Memoir in Books by Azar Nafisi
I give it : ***
I think it : should be given a full review, soon.
41. [2005REREAD] The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien
42. J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis : The Story of their Friendship by Colin Duriez
I give it : **
43. [INCOMPLETE] The Romanov Prophecy by Steve Berry
I give it :
I think it : *yawns*
44. [INCOMPLETE] Everything is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer
I give it :
I think it : not my taste. It seems great and very interesting, but still not my taste. I realise I'm not afraid of a classic literature. Give me Tolstoy and I'll read it. I'm terrifiedof a post-modern literature in which an author tries some new/alternative ways of telling a story. There they go where I can't follow *cries*
45. The Dark Tower : The Gunslinger by Stephen King
I give it : **+5
I think it : Very Stephen King. I wouldn't be surpised if it turned out in the end that The Dark Tower was in factan alien's lair or a psycho house. Anyway, it's a long way. The Gunslinger's only just the very beginning.
46. Knots and Crosses by Ian Rankin (Thai Translated Version)
I give it : **
47. The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert A. Heinlein (Thai Translated Version - จันทราปฎิวัติ)
I give it : ***
I think it : was an excellent novel. A pleasure to read although some of the sci-fi readers I know don't like it for being too political, social, and not a purely science fiction.
48. [2005REREAD] Unfinished Tales by J.R.R.Tolkien
49. The Seventh Unicorn by Kelly Jones
I give it : *+5
I think it : I love the details she put in about the tapestries, its symbols and the history behind. But drop the drama, please. It's not romantic. And it's too boring.
50. The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Fazon
I give it : ***
I think it : awesome. The narration of the book is one of the most vividly brilliant things I've read this year. The description's heart-wrenching and beautifully written (even through an English translated version. Yeah, the original's in Spanish). The plot's fine. Not excellent, but finely done with a touch of Gothic/fantasy-ness.
51. The Second Mrs. Giaconda by E.L.Konisburg
I give it : **
I think it : too too short. *sighs*
52. The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova
I give it : **+5
I think it : enjoyable. Where's the proper review??
53. [2005REREAD] The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
End list.
